WAN Failover and Load Balancing
Introduction
This document provides configuration examples for WAN Failover and Load Balancing. Load Balancing helps distribute network traffic across multiple WAN interfaces to enhance performance and reliability. Since the device has only one built-in modem, dual SIM cards cannot be used for Load Balancing. For full functionality, an additional WAN connection, such as Ethernet is recommended.
Prerequisites
WAN Failover & Load Balance
1. An M2M device that support Multi-WAN
2. SIM cards
3. Ethernet WAN
4. At least one device:
PC, Laptop, Tablet are required to configure the M2M device.
This feature is applicable to the following models.
DWM-530-T, DWM-550-G, DOM-550-GSO, DTM-550-G
Topology
D-Link M2M devices typically support various WAN interfaces for flexible WAN connection scenarios.
1. WAN Failover
When Ethernet WAN-1 is disconnected, the device automatically switches to Cellular WAN-2.
2. Load Balance
The Load Balancing function is designed to manage and distribute bandwidth usage across WAN-1 and WAN-2 connections.
This example demonstrates Load Balancing using the Specific Weight strategy with a 50% weight configuration.
Note: Before starting this configuration, please make sure the basic network setting of D-Link M2M Device is configured properly.
Configuration
1. WAN Failover Setup Configuration:
Go to Basic Network > WAN & Uplink > Physical Interface Tab
Setup Multi-WAN Configuration, here is ISP Ethernet as WAN-1, Cellular as WAN-2 for example

Item | Descrption |
Physical Interface | WAN-1 select Ethernet; WAN-2 select Cellular |
Operation Mode | WAN-1 select Always ON; WAN-2 select Failover |
VLAN Tagging | Default: Disable |
2. Load Balance
Go to Basic Network > WAN & Uplink > Physical Interface Tab
Setup Multi-WAN Configuration, Here is ISP Ethernet as WAN-1, Cellular as WAN-2
Item | Descrption |
Physical Interface | WAN-1 select Ethernet; WAN-2 select Cellular |
Operation Mode | WAN-1 select Always ON; WAN-2 select Always ON |
VLAN Tagging | Default: Disable |
Go to Basic Network > WAN & Uplink > Load Balance Tab
Item | Descrption |
Load Balance | Select Enable |
Load Balance Strategy | Select By Smart Weight |
VLAN Tagging | Default: Disable |
Item | Descrption |
WAN ID |
The available WAN interface |
Weight | Click Edit and change the weight on WAN-1(50%), WAN-2(50%) |
Save | Click the Save |
Test Result
Please set up the device according to the environment described above and configure it accordingly. Then perform validation to ensure the functionality works as expected.
1. Test Results:
1.1 WAN Failover: When Ethernet WAN-1 is disconnected, the network will automatically fail over to Cellular WAN-2.
1.2 Load Balance: Verify that traffic is distributed between WAN-1 and WAN-2 according to the configured weights. (WAN-1: 50%, WAN-2: 50%).
