How Wi‑Fi 6 is better than its predecessors

What is Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6, Wi-FI AX or 802.11ax as it is often referred to is the next generation standard in Wi-Fi technology. Wi-Fi 6 is an upgraded standard that compatible devices, such as routers, can use to broadcast Wi-Fi signals more efficiently, and was built to respond to the massive growth of connected devices in the world. Through this blog,  we'll discuss the various reasons that Wi-FI 6 is faster, more efficient, and has larger capacity than previous generations.

Faster

A new type of wireless that’s even faster, allowing you to bring home next-gen Wi-Fi 6 speeds of up to 1.5 Gbps. Experience a jump of up to 38% faster speeds than Wireless AC, for a better way to enjoy snappier browsing, 4K streaming and online gaming*

Improved Mu-Mimo

Wi-Fi 6 fully utilizes both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands MU-MIMO works with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands starting with the latest WiFi 6 802.11ax standard. This is one of the latest and much-needed improvements over the previous 802.11ac, where MU-MIMO was supported only in the 5GHz band.

Improved data packs

1024 QAM improves the throughput to devices by up to 25%, by increasing the carry rate from 8 to 10 bits, improving raw speeds by 25% compared to 802.11ac 256-QAM

160MHz channels

Higher channel bandwidth, result in faster connections, so with 160 MHz channels, we get the fastest Wi-Fi yet, delivering multi-gigabit low latency connections

Greener

D-Link's range of Wi-Fi 6 routers utilise Target Wake Time (TWT)  which automatically helps reduce battery consumption for all your connected devices by learning when and how often transfers are required, TWT then automatically conserves energy and helps save battery life on your devices

More Capacity

With Wi-Fi 6, you get up to 4X more device capacity than you do with Wi-Fi 5, so you can connect and stream on all your devices without affecting speed or reliability.

OFDMA

OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) is an extension of the OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) architecture and on Wi-Fi 6, it introduces 4x longer OFDM symbols, providing more stability and more data to be transmitted within the same space. A long OFDM symbol also increases range so your Wi-Fi signal can reach further, especially outdoors. Built-in Power Amplifiers and beamforming extend the reach of your Wi-Fi to make full coverage of your home or business much easier.

BSS Coloring

Wi-Fi 6 helps to reduce interference from neighbouring Wi-Fi networks with BSS (Base Service Station) Coloring technology, particularly useful if you like in a block of flats or densely populated area. It makes transmissions more unique by ‘coloring’ them with their own unique code and then allows devices to decide whether to transmit signals or ignore them, based on their “color”.
