Je kompatibilní se standardy Gigabit Ethernet a 1000BASE-T, jak je uvedeno v IEEE 802.3z a 802.3ab. DGS-712 se vkládá do jakéhokoli standardního Gigabit SFP rozhraní a umožňuje gigabitový přenos 1000Base-T přes standardní metalickou strukturovanou kabeláž kategorie CAT5e.
